My Model of Farnsworth house
As mentioned in a previous blog post, my model of Farnsworth house is inspired by one particular image of the house.
Image 1 - Farnsworth house at Christmas
The house usually stands out from its lush green surroundings, but with everything covered in snow, the house seems to blend with the nature around it.
With white being the primary colour of this model, I decided to focus more on texture. I decided to use card, as it comes in many textures and thicknesses. I wanted the house to keep its smooth, sharp, perfect form, but have the base be rougher and more ‘natural’ to represent the snow.
Image 2: Types of cardboard
I chose 1:150 scale, as I wanted more detail than 1:200 would allow. 1:100 was too large and I felt would have required more detail than I wanted to include to keep the modernist, minimalist design of the building.
Image 3: Scales of sketch models
I wanted the house to keep it’s clean lines and finish, which also meant using styrene H supports and 2m square rods for the supports of the building, as it meant a much neater appearance. I also used clean acrylic for the windows, so not all of the model was made of card.
Image 4: Non cardboard materials
I used hand made paper for the base, as it’s not processed it has a more ‘natural’, bumpy texture when compared with processed paper. I felt this represented the snowy landscape well. I still wanted to include the surrounding trees as nature is an important part of the design of the building. I used wire which I painted a dark grey, making the trees appear silhouetted and lifeless as they do in winter.
Image 5: Scale card furniture
The last detail was the furniture. As mentioned, I wanted a higher level of detail, and so made a few pieces of furniture using the same white card as the building. The furniture is still sparse and blends with the rest of the model so as not to take attention away from the true focus; the architecture.
