Initial Essay Ideas (week 20)

For this new unit, consisting of both an essay and a model, I need to choose a topic that can keep my interest, while also being something I can research and make a physical model for.

I tried to compile just a few of the main areas of model making that interest me; a difficult task as I have so many!

My first year essay was all about the making and design of a horror movie monster, and I feel it would be better to choose another area to focus on this time around (despite my current fascination with the low tech, low budget making of classic 1960s doctor who). Heritage work has always interested me, as I always loved museums, but it is a topic I haven't been able to explore much before. I am also very interested in interactive models, a topic I explored during my A levels.

I looked at a few current examples of interactive exhibits in museums and galleries. The Natural History Museum has many interactive models in exhibits and lessons for school trips, including a stegosaurus fossil for kids to learn to assemble and analyse.

Another, much more 'high tech' example is the Wonder Rooms 2.0 exhibit at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, which encourages visitors to learn about and participate in gallery curating using a mix of technology and miniature models, and including hundreds of famous works of art.

With just a few examples I am reminded how fun, interactive and varied museum exhibits can be. They can be hard, soft, technology based for totally tech free, and involving any of your senses. It is also clear that interactive models make fantastic learning tools for museum visitors. It is a topic I am excited to research more.
