FMP Blog post 2 – planning and career changes
In an unexpected turn of events I am totally scrapping my plans to make the arcade cabinet. I now plan to make an architectural model for my FMP.
This drastic change is all relating to our previous unit – Launchpad.
The unit was all about preparing for industry – and one major part of that was figuring out which part of industry you want to work in.
As a disabled maker, I have to know my own limitations in order to thrive. Although the nature of my chronic illnesses can be somewhat unpredictable, I usually thrive with routine. This cuts out a large portion of modelmaking industries. I would also require a desk space to sit and work at.
I knew from the start that I was not keen on the idea of working freelance. Although it may give me more control over project deadlines and hours, it also lacks solid routine. The other thing it lacks is a steady paycheck – a steady job would help with stability outside of my workplace.
I know that I do not want to work in product design, as our projects relating to it were my least favourite making wise (though I do enjoy the theory and discussing design overall).
So with all of my needs discussed, my tutors advised me that architecture would be the best industry for me to work in. I enjoyed the architecture projects that I did in previous years, so while this was not the outcome that I was expecting, I was pleased to know I enjoyed the work I was best suited for.
With this revelation, I knew I needed to change my FMP idea to suit the industry I want to work in.
My tutor linked me to https://www.archdaily.com/ as a good place to start looking for architecture plans.
