FMP Blog post 1 – Planning begins

My initial FMP idea is a prop for a stop motion music video of one of my favourite songs – Cabinet Man by Lemon Demon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdxtcvnnlXI

The song details the story of a man whose organs and consciousness are put inside of an arcade cabinet. I made a mood board for the project as a starting point for designs and ideas.

I want to make a 1:6 scale arcade cabinet with a door in the back that opens to reveal silicone organs, and a hatch in the front with a mouth inside.

I plan to make the cabinet out of laser cut styrene and acrylic, with the organs and mouth being sculpted and then moulded and cast in silicone (and resin for the teeth).

I also plan to include various used computer parts such as wires and circuitry inside of the cabinet where the organs are hooked up.

This model will involve a lot of skills, such as CAD, hard edge and soft edge making. I may also include lights in the machine if there is time once I have made a full plan.

I began a few designs relating to the mouth and paint design for the cabinet. The design for the paint needs to invoke a nostalgia and look retro, like a real arcade cabinet. I am also unsure if I should make it more horror themed and threatening like in the design on the left. The song never mentions a horror game so I feel that the design should not be threatening. I do plan to make the cabinet weathered, however, and make it look like it is old and well used.

I am not completely happy with any of these designs and will keep experimenting until I have a design I am happy with. I am also searching for detailed plans of an arcade cabinet with proper measurements so that I can scale the plans properly for my model.
