Final Progress Report: Week 17

This week has sadly been slower than I would have liked progress wise, due to things outside my control, and with a lot of trial and error. I have a weeks extension on this project which will allow me some more time to finish the sculpt fully.

As mentioned in the last progress report, I had to start again on Mary's shoulders, with more foil inside to build up a base to sculpt onto, which worked much better the second time around.

I also began to create Mary's bonnet. I started with a base of wire mesh, got glued together. I planned to fill the body of the hat with foil or newspaper to allow it to keep its shape.

As you can see in this image however, the bonnet would not keep its shape, the clay would not smooth out and the pattern of the mesh showed through the clay. I also had issues getting the clay to stick to the mesh at all in some places. I have decided to make the bonnet with card, and paint it to match the colour of the clay, as well as a ribbon painted the same colour.

This project has been a learning curve, from gaining the skills to make a scale portrait model, to discovering how to put meaning and messages into the model I make, I feel I have learned a lot.

It was also very difficult. Working from home has made time management much harder for me, which is something I hope to keep improving on in the next project.
