FMP Blog post 5 – material list and choices

With the models chosen the next step was to decide what materials to make them out of, and also at what scale.

I want to show off a variety of eco friendly materials, and also use different scales for some of the models, as different scales require different levels of detail and thus different skills.

For the Majamaja wuorio house, I wanted the model to show the house in the context of the landscape. It is a small and simple structure, dark and neat in complete contrast with the bright and rocky landscape it inhabits. In order to show off the surrounding area I decided that a very small scale would work best for this model, as the tiny details of the building are less important for this particular model. I decided on 1:200 scale, and with the plans showing the topographical contours of the landscape I decided I wanted to use cork to represent the rocks, coloured card to represent the water, wire for the trees and either card or metal for the house.

For the permanent camping model on the other hand, I wanted to show off the details of the house, especially the texture of the metal that the building is made of. In order to show off the building I have chosen to make this model 1:20 scale. I hope to use corrugated card to represent the metal metal that the building is made of.

For the 100 classrooms model I wanted to show off the unique building techniques and materials, so 1:50 scale was chosen. I plan to make this building with terracotta clay to represent the mud of the actual building.

For the Langbos Childrens Centre I wanted to represent just the outside of the buildings, and sho a larger more complex superadobe building. White clay will be used for this model, and it will be made in 1:100 scale.

The For Our Country war memorial will be made of laser cut card, and will be 1:50 scale in order to show the small details of the design.
